How Do I Know You?

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
Raise your hand if you’ve ever been out somewhere and you see someone and your brain goes, “Oh hey,
you know that person!”

But that same brain fails to tell you how you know them…or what their name is.
You start racking said brain searching for all the info it should have given you about that person but didn’t.
In addition to racking, you start praying that the mystery person doesn’t see you because that will be a very awkward conversation and one you would very much like to avoid.
Lately, that’s happening to me more and more.
In most cases, it’s “kids” that my kids knew growing up but because it has been years since I spent any time with them, I don’t fully recognize them in all their adult-ness.
I believe when we stop spending time with someone, or we don’t spend enough time with them, we see that relationship start to dissolve and eventually come to an end. Especially when there is one person in the relationship whose love language is time.
Okay, now raise your hand if you spend time every day getting to know God, the creator of love language.
If you could see me, you would know that my hand isn’t raised.
In today’s scripture, Matthew tells us to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).
Does this mean that we should seek the kingdom of God first thing in the morning?
I sure hope not because the only thing I’m seeking first thing in the morning is coffee and the moxie to face the new day.
No, I don’t believe Matthew is telling us to seek God before breakfast as much as he is telling us to seek Him above everything.
He is telling us to desire the everlasting kingdom of God more than we desire the temporary kingdom we’ve built for ourselves.
If we want to truly desire this everlasting kingdom more than anything else, we have to know why it’s

better than what we have right now.
The only way to know that it is better is to better know its King.
If we want to better know its King, we have to be in relationship with Him.
Good thing we have our Bible, countless Bible studies right on our phone, and prayer to help keep us in relationship with Him.
As we nurture our relationship with God, our heart becomes more aligned with His and we begin to desire Him and His kingdom more and more.
Dear friend, because of Jesus Christ we don’t ever have to worry that God will one day say to us, “How do I know you?”

Today, I encourage you to ask yourself, “How will I commit to better know God?”
Will you spend time reading His Word? Whether that be in the morning, your lunch break, or in the evening.
Will you join a Bible Study group?
Maybe you will simply utter, "Please help me to know you better, God."
Just watch how He answers that prayer and see what He does with your commitment to know Him better.
Seek first the kingdom of God. It’s okay to have coffee while doing it.
Raise your hand if you agree.
